SOUTH CANTERBURY FOOTBALL REPRESENTATIVES

To the Editor of “ The TliriarU Herald " Sir,—Recently I, amongst thousands of other South Canterbury supporters, witnessed the downfall of what was confidently spoken of as being worthy contenders for the Ranfurly Shield. I wish to congratulate the team on their performance because after all they were seriously over-rated and played just as well as the much superior Otago team would allow. However in to-day’s newspaper we read of what must have been a surprise defeat of Southland by this self-same team. To those who have been patiently awaiting the appearance of two outstanding players in Wright and Lundy, Southland’s defeat was not so surprising. Perhaps the selectors may now realise that sub-union players compare more than favourably with many Timaru representatives who were included in the team for the Ranfurly Shield match, and give these subunion boys something of a better spin when future representative teams are being selected. If the Rugby Union would have South Canterbury’s support in football circles, let them realise that the sub-unions in Waimate and in Mackenzie form an important part and are capable of producing players worthy to uphold the highest ideals of any former teams chosen in Timaru and tagged a South Canterbury representative side.—I am, SUB-UNION. Waimate, August 31.
