RUGBY UNION

REPORT ON SOUTHERN TOUR

MEETING OF COMMITTEE

The report of the manager of the team that visited Otago and Southland (Mr M. J. Angland) was presented at the weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the South Canterbury Rugby Union last night. Present —Messrs A. G. Knowles (chairman), A. B. Rowlands, M. J. Angland, C. W. Keinan, C. L. Cutler, J. M. Ritchie, D. Hepburn, O. S. Priest, and A. B. Herdman.

“I am sorry that we did not win against Otago, but the team did its best,” said Mr Angland. Speaking as a selector he was certain that South Canterbury was not as weak as the score indicated. He thought, however, that in the match the team did not play up to its best form. The Otago Union made arrangements for anything the visitors required. They had not much need to ask for any hospitality as the team was under strict discipline while awaiting the big match. The match against Southland, said Mr Angland, was full of interest, the home forwards being the best he had seen, including Otago. They did not possess as much finish as Otago, but they were a wonderful pack and did great work in the line-outs. The hospitality of the Southland Union was, to say the least of it, great. While South Canterbury won 10-8, the last 10 minutes was thrilling. Mr Angland acknowledged the kindness of the Southland Union, Mr and Mrs A. Mitchell of the Club Hotel, and Mr H.

Hogg, a former Timaruvian, who assisted in the entertainment of the team at Bluff. The manager paid tribute to the behaviour of the 20 players on tour, the discipline, he said, being excellent. He paid a tribute to the assistance given by the coach (Mr S. H. Sullivan), the baggage men (Messrs Newton and Hathaway) and the two members of the official party associated with the team.

It was decided to thank the Otago and Southland Unions for their hospitality, and to acknowledge also the assistance given by Mr and Mrs Mitchell, Mr Hogg and the Otago Wrestling Association. Mr G. T. Rang!, Temuka, wrote asking permission for M. O’Connor, D. Huria, B. Leonard (Temuka), and A. Solomon (Zingari) to be included in the South Canterbury Maori team to play the North Canterbury Maoris at Tuahiwi on September 5. The application was granted.
