CUSTOMS REVENUE

LARGE INCREASE SHOWN SALES TAX A RECORD The total revenue collected at the Port of Timaru during the month ended yestenday amounted to £14,911 14s Id. compared with £7,953 Ils lid in August last year. There was a correspondingly large increase in revenue from all sources, the principal one being in sales tax, which yielded £1949 19s Bd, .compared with £1479 9s 9d in the corresponding month last year, and which is the largest amount collected from the tax since its introduction. The collections of tyre tax this month totalled £l,BBO compared with £3078 in August, 1935, a decrease of £1199. The collections sales tax totalled £93,205, a new record figure, compared with £75,608 in August 1935, an increase of £17,597. The beer excise collections for August totalled £4253 compared with £3964 in August 1935, an increase of £289. DUNEDIN By Telegraph Hres? Association DUNEDIN, August 31. An encouraging increase in the value of imports into the port of Dunedin is disclosed when the returns for the month just ended are compared with those for August of last year. The total receipts from all sources were £14,026, as compared with £9318 for the corresponding period last year. Customs duty increased by £2486 and petrol duty by £1832, as compared with the same period last year. The figures are considered particularly good as August is recognised as a comparatively slack month. The returns for the first eight months of the present year show an increase of approximately 30 per cent, on last year.
