MEAT BOARD LAMB COMPETITION Separate annual competitions among the lamb exporting districts of the North and South Islands constitute an important factor in maintaining high quality, and suitability for export, as the entries are not only judged in New Zealand, but the awards on which the Meat Producers Board’s silver challenge shield for each Island are based, are the decisions of Smithfield judges. Conditions for this year’s competiti?ns are being circulated to the Agricultural and Pastoral Associations, which control the competition and organise field days to give New Zealand farmers an opportunity of inspecting the exhibits at the freezing works. Local prizes are awarded on these occasions, while the Meat Producers Board offers in addition to the Challenge Shield for each Island, prizes of £l5, £lO and £5 for the three best individual lots of lambs shipped from each Island, this judging taking place in London.

The Board is arranging to send to England the awards made in the competitions in New Zealand, but they will not be disclosed to the English judges until they have made their decisions, when the Board’s London manager will endeavour to get the Smithfield authorities to make a separate report where any pen awarded a prize in New Zealand judging is not placed at London.

Lambs for the North Island are !o be killed not later than November 30 and lambs in the South Island by December 24.

BREWERY PROFITS LOWER The accounts of C. L. Innes and Co., Ltd., brewers, for the year ended June 30, show a net profit of £3840 against £4516 for the previous year, and £4BO for 1934. However, an increased income tax payment was necessary in respect of the 1935 accounts, reducing the profit for that year to £4103. In the past year the profit figure has been affected by provision for income tax on the higher scale and by more liberal depreciation allowance. With £393 brought forward £4233 is available. Preference dividend of 8 per cent., less 20 per cent., and an ordinary dividend of 8 per cent., unchanged, require £2320, and £9113 is carried forward.
