FREIGHTS FROM AUSTRALIA

The Australian Producers’ Shipping Agency has decided to cut shipping conference rates for the transport of wool from Sydney to London by 25 per cent. Conference charges at the present time are a fraction over Id per lb. The independent company will charge 2d per lb. A Norwegian motor-ship has been chartered to load from Sydney during the middle of next month. It will sail for London direct. The vessel can lift 20,000 bales, but it is likely that she will be loaded with a base of wheat before wool is shipped. It is stated that the tramp motor-ship chartered will probably be followed by other Norwegian freighters at five-weekly intervals, and that a regular service will be maintained throughout the year. During the wool season many of the ships will go to Australia in ballast, but it is expected that outward freights will be obtained between April and August, the slack wool months.

HENRY BERRY AND CO.

Henry Berry and Co. (Australasia) Ltd. have declared a dividend at the rate of 7 per cent, per annum for the half-year ended August 31 on all cumulative preference shares, payable September 1.

FIXATION OF PRICES

The whole subject of fixation of prices and marketing control will receive the earnest consideration of the State and Federal Governments of Australia during the next few weeks and probably will be discussed at the Premiers’ Conference, which will commence at Adelaide on August 26. In the meantime no immediate dislocation of market prices of butter, cheese, and dried fruits is expected as a result of the Privy Council decision in the dried fruits case. Marketing arrangements covering last season’s dried fruits are well advanced, while the margin between local and overseas prices is not thought sufficient to induce any large scale defection from the present equalisation system. At present prices, wheat is in no need of any control measures.
