MORE DREDGING
EXTRA HOUR A DAY TO BE WORKED To expedite its dredging programme the Timaru Harbour Board at yesterday’s meeting decided to work its dredge an extra hour a day on ive days in the week. The chairman (Mr T. B. Garrick? explained that the question of working a double shift had been considered, but such an arrangement would need two crptiins, and two sets of officers and men. The expense would be very heavy. It had. been suggested also that the vessel work an extra hour on five days a week. On that basis the extra wages for the crew would be £7 a week and extra coal and oil would cost £5. The extra wages did not include overtime for the officers which would have to be paid. The extra time worked would result in the vessel taking 1J additional loads a week, said Mr W. H. Orbell. It was agreed on the motion of Messrs D. C. Turnbull and Orbell that the extra hour a day be worked until the dredge proceeded to Port Chalmers for docking. The Standing Committee was empowered to go into the question of the dredge working a double shift.
