Ex-King Alfonso, who is staying at a village in the Carinthian Mountains, refuses to comment on the letter, which was found in his Madrid home. STATEMENT OF EX-KING WHOLE-HEARTED SYMPATHY WITH REBELS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright VIENNA. August 27. In a statement made to the correspondent of the British United Press, ex-King Alfonso, through his secretary, said he had taken no part in the Spanish revolt, and had not written to any of the opposing parties. His Majesty holds that it is not a fight between Republicans and Monarchists: it is a grim struggle between the forces of order and disorder. Once the struggle is won and Bolshevism overthrown, only then will it be time for a decision by the King. His Majesty fully approves General Franco’s plan to establish a military dictatorship to restore tranquility after the war. Later, if the choice is for a monarchy, the King is ready. The statement was issued at Dellach, Carinthia, when Alfonso is golfing. It adds that his Majesty is willing to return, as a duty to the country and people if called back, but in no other circumstances. The King is completely mystified by reports of the letter found in Madrid, cabled yesterday, and emphatically disavows it. The present movement does not involve a Monarchist issue; for Instance, there are two Republican generals in the Nationalist movement. That is proof enough that it is directed purely against Bolshevism. The secretary added that the Bourbon Princes, who offered their services to national came were prepared to fight for it. but the offers were rejected with an explanation that it was not their affair, and they should keep out.
