PLOUGHING MATCH
MR A. BROWN’S SUCCESS The Royal Championship Ploughing Match at Papakaio was won iy Mr A. Brown, of Waimate, who also annexed several cups and specials. Mr Brown had previously won the championship title in the North Island. The gathering proved a great success. There was an attendance of between 4000 and 5000 and the entries for all events constituted a record for Papakaio and probably for the South Island. Mr J. C. Hay (Morven) was one of the judges in the ploughing section. Prize winners from the Waimate district were as follows: Class A (open): First and championship, A. Brown (Waimate); oldest ploughman in class, H. Voss (Willowbridge); speci.il for ploughmen who have never won a prize, H. Voss; best break, A. Brown. Class B (open), coulter cut: J. C. Brohan (Waimate) 2; oldest ploughman in class, J. C. Brohan. Class D, tractors, plain ploughing: N. Hayman (Morven) 1, V. Cooney (Morven) 3. International Harvester specials: N. Hayman 1, V. Cooney 2; best break, V. Cooney. Best decorated team, A. Brown 2. Procters, The Opticians, Christchurch, will be making their next professional visit to Waimate on Friday, 18th September, when they may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Royal Hotel.
