WEST END CLUB THE YEAR REVIEWED The twenty-third annual report of the West End Bowling Club, to be presented at the annual meeting this week, expresses sincere regret at the death of the following members — Messrs W. J. Walker (a past president), F. Field, G. H. Sewell, G. Trott (life member) and T. W. Satterthwaite (patron). Resignations were received from G. Haworth, J. Richards and J. Timlin on account of their leaving the district. The green was officially opened for the 1935-36 season on October 12. The president (Mr A. B. Shipley) welcomed members and friends, and called on the then Mayor (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite) to open the season. Eleven rinks were entered by the club in the Centre competitions, and although not successful in any section, members played many enjoyable games. A challenge for the Bristol Cup was alsp unsuccessful. R. G. Sampson, G. Blackham, L. Hunt and T. Currie (s) represented the club in the representative match against Canterbury (Steans Cup) and in the Murray Bowl fixture against North Otago the club was represented by J. Little, I. Maclaren, J. Gunn and C. Ellis (s). Both of these matches were played on the West End green. In the Centre Champion of Champion games the club was represented by the following: Singles, G. Blackham; doubles, J. Ewing and T. Currie (s); rinks, R. G. Sampson, W. Guthrie, I. Maclaren and L. Hunt (s). Keen interest was shown in the club competitions, and many closely contested gamps were witnessed, with the following results: Champion singles, J. Gunn; junior champion singles, P. O. Harding; junior champion singles (1934-36), F. Davey; handicap singles, F. Ltegins; champion doubles (193435), J. Creenfield and L. Hunt (s); handicap doubles, J. Little and N. Gabites (s); colts, H. A. Booth; Adkins Cup rinks,A. B. Shipley, M. Broadwood, D. Oram and I. Maclaren (s). The club was represented at the Dominion championships at Christ- j church by two rinks skipped by T. i Gurrie and I. Maclaren respectively. | T. Currie and L. Hunt took rinks to the Christchurch Easter tournament, and D. Gibson’s rink represented the club at the Oamaru Easter tournament. Friendly games played with other clubs during the season were very much enjoyed, many preferring these to competition games. Congratulations are extended to the Women’s Club on winning the Ferguson Cup for the second year in succession, and also for their fine performances in the women’s tournaments held in Timaru and Oamaru. Thanks were expressed to the ladies for their assistance during the year, especially at the g?.la and annual social. A special vote of thanks was due to Mrs A. B. Shipley, wife of the president, for her splendid help during the year. The receipts for the year amounted to £325/13/10 and the expenditure to £330/1/10, leaving a credit of £5/12/on the year’s working. The president and the committee expressed thanks to members who gave trophies and donations; to the greenkeeper (Mr G. Blackham) and green supervisors (Messrs Currie and Maclaren) for the good condition of the green, to members for the use of cars, to the auditor (Mr W. J. Smith), and to all who helped in any way with the affairs of the club. The assistance of the Timaru newspapers was much appreciated.
