SEDDON SHIELD
RETENTION BY MARLBOROUGH By Telegrarih hi «->- a—ion BLENHEIM. August 22 In one of the best Seddon Shield games for several years Marlborough retained the trophy, defeating Nelson by 22 points to 19. Played at a fast pace, the match was open and full of incident. The Nelson pack was superior and obtained a feast of ball, but the backs failed to add the finishing touches. Marlborough owed its victory to brilliant attacking backs, who ran up an 11 point lead which Nelson reduced by two tries in the last few minutes. Mellish, the Marlborough half-back, was the outstanding player on the field, followed by Lane (fiveeighth) and Kotua (full-back). The best forwards were Brown, Kimberley and M. Woolley. For Nelson McLean. Craig and Thompson were the choice of a solid pack, and Busch and Ward of the backs. Marlborough scored six tries and Nelson five, each converting two.
