SOUTHERN DEFEATS FAIRLIE In a keenly contested match at the Fairlie school on Thursday afternoon, a team representing the southern schools defeated Fairlie by eight points to six. For Southern, Sargent scored and Campbell converted, and Dickson kicked a penalty. Cameron and Jones obtained two tries for Fairlie. Mr W. G. Black was referee. Schools represented in the Southern team were Albury, Cave, Chamberlain, Ma Waro, Mount Nessing, Cricklewood, Tengawai and Cannington. A basketball team from the Southern schools also played a Fairlie team. Fairlie won by 11 goals to 10. Miss M. Brown was referee. Visitors and teams were entertained to afternoon tea provided by the women of the Fairlie district. On behalf of Southern visitors, Mr D. S. Loder extended thanks for the hospitality received, and remarked on the success that had attended the tournament.
Mr B. F. Hayman, headmaster of the Fairlie District High School, referred to the good spirit of rivalry that had prevailed, and thought that in the future more parents would attend the school tournaments.
