GIFTS TO COUNCIL

PHOTO OF LATE MAYOR LINK FOR MAYORAL CHAIN The members of the family of the late Mayor (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite) have presented to the Timaru Borough Council an enlarged photograph of Mr Satterthwaite, and have also made a gift of photographs which at present hang in the Mayoral room, but which were the property of the late Mayor. In addition they have offered to provide a link in the Mayoral Chain in memory of their father. Intimation of the wishes of the family was contained in a letter sent by Mr J. S. Satterthwaite to the Council as follows: “On behalf of my mother and our family, I have pleasure in asking you and the Council to accept an enlarged photograph of my late father, to complete the portraits of the Mayors, which hang in the Council Chambers wherein he spent so many interesting hours. I would also like permission to add, at our expense, a link to the Mayoral Chain, in memory of my late father. There is also in the Mayor’s room pictures belonging to my late father which we would like the Council to accept.” The Mayor (Mr P. C. Vinnell) said that the photograph, when hung on the wall of the Council Chamber, would serve to remind them of the work of the late Mayor. It had been said that Mr Satterthwaite’s hobby had been the business of the Council, but he would go further end say that one of his principal interests in life had been the Council work. He was sure that the Council appreciated the gift, and also the offer of a link for the Mayoral Chain. Referring to the pictures in the Mayor’s room, Mr Vinnell said that he knew that they had been of great interest to overseas visitors, and the offer was very much appreciated. He felt that he was expressing the wish of the Council when he extended thanks to Mrs Satterthwaite and her family for their fine gifts. He had very much pleasure in taking over the gifts on behalf of the Council. The Town Clerk (Mr E. A. Killick) said that he had had a communication from Mr J. Hole, who was Mayor in 1901, asking if the Council would accept a gift of a photograph of the Council of 1901. The Mayor said that he was sure that the gift would be welcomed by the Council, for it would serve to remind them of some of the men who had gone before them and had done good work for the town. He was certain that the gift and the spirit in which it was given would be appt eclated by the Council.
