HOCKEY

The Jacobs Cup competition in the North Otago Men’s Hockey Association was advanced another stage on Saturday when both Waimate teams met defeat. At Waimate Oamaru defeated Waimate A by 6 goals to 4. For Waimate Samways, Wilson and Ball were prominent, although they played below their usual good form. Waimate A were without the services of their goal-keeper, McDonald, his absence being a severe handicap. This player is an asset to his side and it is unfortunate his attendance is not more regular. Waimate B, with a handicap of four, went under to Rovers, who had a handicap of three, by 8 goals to 4. This was a very ragged game and did not produce good hockey. Commencing the game with one man short and being unfortunate in losing the services of W. Jack, who had to retire owing to injuries, Waimate B received a bad setback.
