EUCHRE PARTY
The Orange Lodge held its fortnightly progressive euchre tournament on Saturday night. The prize winners were: R. Moore 1, G. Joyce 2, G. Courtis 3, E. J. Meredith 4. GLENAVy WOMEN’S INSTITUTE At the monthly meeting of the Glenavy Women’s institute, Mrs Hamilton presided over a large attendance of members. After the usual business had been dealt with, the president thanked all members who had helped to make the recent birthday party such a success. Special votes of thanks were passed to Mesdames Andrews and Solomon for their donation of a beautiful birthday cake and to Mrs Cuthbertson for her Iticky parcel. The president also thanked the stall-holders and committee who had worked so hard at the carnival held last month. The proceeds amounted to nearly £4O and would be divided between the Institute and the Glenavy School Committee. Several invitations to attend birthday parties were received from other branches, and also one from the Waitaki W.D.F.U. Letters were recieved from the Institute for the Blind and the Returned Soldiers’ Association asking the Institute’s help in Selling their basketware and Christmas gift articles. It was decided to accede to the requests. Four new members were elected. Mrs McCulloch, the delegate to the Dominion conference, gave a most interesting report which was much enjoyed. Mrs Cuthbertson gave a short talk on the arts and crafts branch of the conference. A vote of thanks was passed to both speakers. Mrs Dickson, a North Island visitor, gave a short account of her Women’s Institute work which was much appreciated. A delicious afternoon tea was then dispensed by Mesdames Borrie, Berry and Miss Berry. Competitions resulted: Bloom, Miss N. Duff 1, Mrs McNaughton 2; sponge cake, Miss C. McLean 1, Mrs Duff and Mrs McNaughton equal 2. Juniors: Miss Carroll 1, Miss McNaughton 2. a vote of thanks to the president, Mrs Hamilton, and to the hostesses brought a very enjoyable afternoon to a close.
