WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

CAVE At the August meeting of the Cave Women’s Institute, Mrs G. G. Rich presided, and expresed pleasure at seeing so many present. One new member was welcomed. A motion of sympathy was passed to members who were ill. The president thanked all those who had helped witn the Bay at the Winter Show. Mention was made of Arbor Day and it was . rranged to plant trees on Saturday August 15. Final arrangements were made for the hard up dance in aid of hall furnishings. Mrs Milne of Wanganui, gave a short talk on the different conditions prevailing in her Institute and the one at Cave, but said the aims were the same, the betterment of homes and the community and the country as a whole. Mr Dunne of the St. John Ambulance Timaru, briefly explained the idea of farming a class at Cave, and intending members were asked to hand in their names to the secretary. Both speakers were accorded a vote of thanks. For the rest of the afternoon the younger members of the Institute were responsible. Miss Mai Scott presided, and on behalf of the younger members of the Institute Miss Mary Robinson presented Mrs Rich with a beautiful posy of spring flowers. Miss Sheila Howell who described her travels in England and Ireland was accorded a vote of thanks. After afternoon tea served by the following hostesses, Misses M. McPherson, I. Moses, J. Laurie, R. Wisely and S. Weavers, a play entitled “None of them Perfect,” was read by Misses M. Scott, S. Ellis, J. Gillingham, E. Chant. M. McPherson and L. Clark. Competitions resulted. —Hand worked nightdress, Mrs L. Gray 1, Miss M. McPherson 2, Miss E. Robinson 3. Floral button hole: Miss Amyes 1, Mrs A. McPherson 2, Mrs W. Little 3. Nut loaf: Mrs L. Gray 1, Miss R. Wisely 2, Mrs L. Gray 3. Special prizes were given to Miss M. McPherson (hand worked nightdress), and Miss R. Wisely (nut loaf).
