It is surprising to see a woman gardener in green linen coat and brown knickers and gaiters working in the grounds of the Royal Horticultural Society at Wisley, states the London “Daily Mail.” She is the first woman to be allowed the privilege of gaining experience there, although there are 16 young men students. The woman gardener who has gained admission was trained at Waterperry Horticultural School, Oxford. She has been working in the propagating department at Wisley for the last few weeks and attends the students’ lectures. A Princess has found an interesting use for one of the old-fashioned copper preserving pans in which Victorian housewives made their jams, states the London “Daily Mail.” For years a feature of the spacious inner hall at Princess Beatrice’s residence at Kensington Palace has been a tall, wellbranched palm. It was looked after with the greatest care and sent away once a year to be spring-cleaned by experts. Recently the Princess decided that she would like something lighterlooking there. The palm has been banished, and its place taken by a copper preserving pan filled with soil and a flowering plant.
