WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

TEMUKA To celebrate its sixth birthday, the Temuka Women’s Institute held a musical and dramatic afternoon in the Parish Hall on Tuesday, members of the Institutes comprising the Temuka Group and representatives of the W.D.F.U., Mothers’ Union, P.W.M.U., and W.C.T.U. being guests. Miss M. Ferguson presided. Musical items were given by Miss Hall, Miss Hewson (Orari) and the Winchester Women’s Institute choir, under Mrs J. Deßenzy, which Is practising for the Federation’s choir contest. A one-act play, produced by Mrs T. G. Beck, was given by Mesdames D. B. Murray and A. S. Mclnnes and Misses R. Twomey, M. Hancox, H. Harris and L. Shiels. The president was the recipient of a bouquet, presented by Mrs J. N. Taylor, who expressed the members’ gratitude to Miss Ferguson for the great amount of work undertaken by her. The members were privileged to have her for their president. The secretary (Miss K. McShane) was also the recipient of a bouquet presented by Mrs L. J. Grant, who referred to the great amount of work enthusiastically carried out by her. Two interesting letters were read from the Instiute’s “link,” the Lee Institute, England. Two new members were elected. The candles on the birthday cake were lighted by three elderly members of the Winchester Institute and choir, the Women’s Institute song being sung while the cake was being cut. Z.RUNDEL There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Arundel Women’s Institute held in the Howard Hall on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs Wooding presided. One new member was elected. Mrs Wooding welcomed the visitors present. It was decided to send two members to the educational week to be held in Christchurch. Mrs Wooding proposed holding a Dutch auction next month, and that the meeting be made an evening meeting open to those interested. The junior members then took over the meeting a staged a mock wedding, which was much enjoyed by all. The following members took part: Officiating clergyman, Miss E. Edwards; bride, Miss M. Galletly: bridegroom, Miss D. Johnston; bridesmaids, Misses A. Gould and H. Pratt; flower-girl, Miss M. Ambler; best man. Miss H. Plthie; bride’s mother, Mrs Johnston; bride’s father, Miss B. Smith; bridegroom’s mother, Miss E. McCully; bridegroom’s father, Miss D. Edwards. The competitions resulted: —Seed cake, Mrs Pratt and Mrs N. Brown (equal) 1, Miss B. Smith and Miss H. Pratt (equal) 2; seed crome, Mrs N. Brown, Mrs Johnston and Miss D. Johnston (equal) 1. The hostesses for the afternoon were the junior members.
