WORK ON STEAMERS

SEARCHING CANADIAN REPORT United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright OTTAWA, June 15. The report of the House of Commons committee on industrial and foreign relations, urges greater employment of Canadians on steamers operated by the Government, or under Government subsidies. It recommends that 50 per cent, of those employed on Canadian national ships as stewards and firemen should be Canadians. Declaring that the Canadian-Aus-tralian line employs only eight Canadians hi 510 crew members, the committee recommends the line to be requested “to afford Canadian sermen a reasonable degree of employment at the earliest convenience.” It urges the Canadian-Pacific to be obliged to use only Canadian seamen in the deck services on the Canada-Orient Line. The Canadian Pacific had protested that to replace Chinese with whites on the Oriental liners would involve such extra cost as to make the operation financially impossible. Of 2033 men in the service, 265 are whites.
