OVERSEAS BUSINESS INCREASES FAVOURABLE OUTLOOK REVEALED British Official Wireless (Received June 16, 5.5 p.m.) RUGBY, June 15. Tire preliminary figures for overseas trade for May show an increase of exports and imports over bot’. those for the preceding month and a year ago. The exports last month amounted to £36,396,327, compared with £33,427,144 in April and £35,206,862 in Mr.y, 1935. The figures for imports at the corresponding rates are: £69,178,336, £66,665,586 and £64,528,697 respectively. The re-exports were £5,634,554 in May, against £5,922,051 in April and £5,559,760 a year ago. The total exports for the first five months this year were £175,852,585, an increase of £2,274,544 over the corresponding period of last year and £18,244,500 over the first five months of 1934. The imports for the same period in this and the two preceding years were respectively £335,667,912, £302,072,560 and £301,311,350. The reexports at £27,391,171 for the five months show an increase of £3,750,690 over the same period in 1935 and £2,883,878 over 1934. The Board of Trade returns for May show: — Imports, £69,178,000; exports, £36,396,000; re-exports, £5,634,000. Increases The principal increases compared with May of last year were:— Exports Miscellaneous manufactures, £469,000; woollen worsteds, £356,000. Re-Exports Non-ferrous metal and manufactures, £350,000. Imports Dairy produce, £802,000; fresh fruit and vegetables, £630,000; raw cotton and waste, £554,000; wool, raw and waste, £410,000; hides and skins, £497.000; machinery, £425,000. Decreases Decreases were;— Imports Meat, £599,000; rubber, £643,000. Exports Coal, £298,000; non-ferrous metals and manufactures, £212,000. Re-Exports Wool, raw and waste, £199,000.
