WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

SOUTH CANTERBURY FEDERATION. The executive of the South Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes met in the guild room at Geraldine on Monday, when the following members were present: —Mesdames L. E. Williams (president, in the chair), G. A. Macdonald, P. W. Hislop, S. C. Chisnall, A. G. Brown, J. McLeod, I’. Grant W. E. Mills, A. B. Mackenzie, M. B. Reid and Misses A. T. Williams (secretary). Brown, Ferguson and Davies. An apology was received from Miss A. Begg. Members stood in silence as a tribute of respect to the late King and the following resolution of sympathy is to be sent to the Secretary of State for the Dominions:—“Members of the Dominion Federation of New Zealand Women’s Institutes respectfully desire to express their deepest sympathy with Her Majesty the Queen in the passing of our beloved King.” A motion of sympathy was passed with Miss Begg in her bereavement. It was proposed that a letter of appreciation for her work and best wishes for her future be sent to Mrs Elder of Waimate, who is leaving for Home. Many reports were given by voluntary organisers on their visits to Institutes. Members also spoke of the visit of Miss Stops, of England, who is making a tour of the Dominion in an unofficial capacity. Matters in connection with the recent Historical Pageant were discussed and arrangements made for a repeat performance in Timaru on March 7. Mrs F. Curtis, of Ashburton, president of the Mid-Canterbury Federation, who was present, presented the financial report of the performance of the Pageant in Ashburton. Miss G. Brown of Temuka. spoke in appreciation of the work of Miss E. N. Davies who produced the Pageant. It was proposed that nomination papers for the annual Council meeting be printed. Institutes are asked through their group conveners to send in their entries as soon as possible, for the exhibition to be held at the annual Council meeting in April, in order assist the executive in arranging bays. It was decided to hold the choir contest during Winter Show week.
