Conditions have not yet been made remunerative for British shipping as a whole, says “The Times” in comment on the tramp subsidy. In fact, some sections of it, notably the liner companies serving the transpacific routes, are worse off than they were. The cause of their plight is perfectly wed understood. They, as private companies relying upon their own resources, have to compete with rivals heavily subsidised by foreign Governments, and are, moreover, shut out by foreign legislation, from a portion of the trade. Thev have maintained a long and gallant struggle against heavy odds, but they are now finding the strain unbearable. It is vital to British interests, Including the interests of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, that they should not be driven off the trade routes which they opened and on which they did all the pioneer work. There have been conversations from time to time between the British Governments affected concerning measures which might be taken to redress the balance between the British lines and their foreign subsidised rivals. It is time that these conversations led to definite and effective measures of self-protection. NEW ZEALAND PORTS By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, February 4.
