Mr D. H. Pipps, Christchurch, is staying at the Dominion. Mr J. L. Wilson and Mr E. Bevington (London) are visiting Timaru, and are staying at the Grosvenor. Messrs L. Austin (Nelson), J. E. Thompson (Milton) and M. Graham and L. M. Smith (Dunedin) are staying at the Empire. Adjutant and Mrs W. Knight, of the Salvation Army, have returned to Timaru after having been on furlough in Christchurch. Mr R. Pollock, representing Stanley McKay’s Australian “Gaieties of 1936,” is in Timaru making arrangements for the company”s season at the Theatre Royal. The Rev. C. L. Mountford, vicar of Temuka, has been appointed by the Bishop of Christchurch to take the place of the Rev. E. C. W. Powell, vicar of Sydenham, who has resigned. Guests at the Grosvenor include:— Messrs C. V. Quigley, L. P. Martin, J. Ainger (Christchurch), H. Ross, D. C. Morrison (Wellington), and T. W. Tuckey (Dunedin). Mr C. J. McKenzie, engineer-in-chief, Public Works Department, who was seriously ill in hispital at Greymouth, is reported to be much improved. He was taken ill in South Westland last Tuesday and taken by air to Hokitika. The Rev. James Cumming, of Ngaruawahia, will succeed the Rev. J. W. Martin in the charge of the Presbyterian Church, Taradale, Mr Martin to assume charge of the work of the Presbyterian Church in the Mangapapa district, Gisborne. Brigadier-General G. R. H. Cheape, D. 5.0., M.C., and Brigadier-General A. B. Forman, D. 5.0., are passengers by the Mataroa, which is due at Auckland from London on February 2. Both were several times mentioned in despatches during the Great War, but have since retired from the army. Dr. R. H. Hogg, who is leaving Invercargill this week to live in retirement in Wellington, was the guest of honour at a dinner arranged by the medical men of Southland and was presented with an attache case and an arm chair, both of which were suitably inscribed.
