TEAM INTEREST IN SOUTH CANTERBURY At the meeting of the Management Committee of the South Canterbury Cricket Association last night the president (Mr A. E. Lawrence) reviewed the progress of the arrangements being made for the visit of the M.C.C. cricket team to Timaru. The president said that although some re-arrangement of the New Zealand tour had been found necessary, because of the extra match being played in Australia, no alteration had been found necessary in the splendid date allotted for the visit of the team to South Canterbury, which has been fixed for Friday and Saturday, December 27 and 28. The response made by the supporters of cricket in South Canterbury to the Association’s invitation for guarantees to share the Association’s responsibility against the match resulting in a loss, had been most encouraging and already the guarantees amounted to £l4O. The Association was deeply grateful to the supporters of the game in South Canterbury for their practical support which had come from both town and’ country. Excellent work was being done by the special ground committee in preparing a wicket at Fraser Park, and it was anticipated that the ground would be in excellent order for the match. A meeting of secretaries had been held and arrangements were well forward for the catering. Public interest had been created by the sporting cricket being played by the members of the M.C.C. team, now in Australia, and it was no exaggeration to say that the visit of the young and capable side that was about to tour New Zealand, was being anticipated with Dominion-wide interest. The South Canterbury selectors had chosen twenty-two players to attend practice, and it was hoped to have a first-class team ready for the match. The rector of the Timaru Boys’ High School who had shown keen interest in the forthcoming match, had consented to - provide a practice wicket at the Rectory, and practices would commence at once. “Taking everything into consideration,” the president concluded, “1 think it can be taken for granted that the visit of the M.C.C. team to Timaru will be a red-letter day in the history of South Canterbury cricket. The standard of play in town and country should receive a valuable fillip through the lessons that would be learned by the cricketers of the district in playing against such splendid exponents of the game, and players who will watch the two teams in action.” FRIENDLY matches The following is the draw for friendly matches to be played on Fraser Park on Saturday next:— No, 1 ground—Bruce’s v. Cambridge; Colmoco v. Optimists. No 2 Ground. —Herald v. Rovers; Googlies v. Civil Service.
