UPPER WAITOHI
OPENING OF TENNIS SEASON At the official opening of the Upper Waitohi Tennis Club, the president, Mr C. P. Allen, in welcoming the 40 visitors and members, pointed out the value of .he courts to the district, not only as tennis courts for the adults, but as a playing area for the school children. Before calling on the club captain, Mr W. Pearse, to say a few words, he appealed to members to play the game for the sake of the game and not merely for rewards and prizes. Mr Pearse then traced tfie growth of tennis in the district for the last 38 years, beginning with a chip court at the school, an asphalt court at Mr J. Orr’s, then one at Lower Waitohi, and now two new asphalt courts back at Upper Waitohi School again. Mr Ralph Holdgate, president of the South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, congratulated the club on its enterprise and declared the courts officially open for play. An excellent exhibition of tennis was given by four visitors: R. Holdgate, Innes Jones, J. McKay, and Taylor. A very successful day was brought to a close by a dance held in the school by the School Committee. The winners of novelty dances were Mrs Milne and Mr F. Milne and Miss L. Crombie and Mr A. Dick. Music was supplied by a Pleasant Point musician, and Mr John Dick was M.C.
