SPRINGBROOK

PIONEER HONOURED There was a large gathering at the Springbrook School on Friday night to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Martin Sullivan who are leaving the district to live in retirement in Timaru. The evening was spent in dancing, music being supplied by Miss Carrie Smallridge, Messrs Matthews and E. Sinclair. Mr L. Allen was master of ceremonies. Mr W. A. Schmelz said it was very gratifying to see such a representative gathering present, and on behalf of the residents of the district, he expressed regret at the departure of the guests who had been in the district for 53 years. Mr Schmelz apologised for the absence of Mrs Sullivan who was unable to be present. Mr J. Stowell spoke of the high esteem in which Mr and Mrs Sullivan were held. During their half century of residence their home was open to all and Mrs Sullivan pould be regarded as the “Mother of Springbrook." Mr Cloake expressed regret at losing such a good neighbour, and a wish that they would enjoy their well earned retirement. Miss B. Moyle also wished the guests future health and happiness, and said that Mr Sullivan had been known in the Moyle family 56 years. Mr H. Arden recounted old times and said Mr Sullivan had been one of the best shearers and stackers of his day. Mr R. B. Williams, on behalf of the residents of the district, asked Mr Sullivan to accept a walking stick, a set of pipes, and a travelling rug for Mrs Sullivan. Mr Sullivan in returning thanks for himself and Mrs Sullivan, was greeted with hearty applause, after which they were accorded musical honours. During the evening Mrs Arden delighted the company with her singing. RAINFALL During November a good rainfall totalling 3.43 inches fell at Springbrook, which was greatly needed by the farming community to ensure a successful season. This recording is the largest monthly total this year, and also a large increase on the recording for the same month in 1934, when 90 points fell. Rain fell on 10 different days during the month as follows: 3rd 30 points, 6th 65 points, 10th 35 points, 11th 40 points, 12th 60 points, 14th 46 points, 18th 12 points, 19th 3 points, 24th 3 points, 25th 15 points. Total for month 3.43 inches. The total rainfall to date this year is 15.29 inches which is below the average fall for the district, which is approximately 20.28 inches. The rainfall to date for 1934 totalled 25.33 inches and 1933 20.25 inches.
