WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

MT. NESSING Mrs Fisher presided at the November meeting of the Mt. Nessing Women’s Institute, and extended a welcome to visitors from Sherwood Downs, Fairlie, and Gisborne. One new member was elected. Mrs Fisher’s invitation to hold the December Garden Party at “Shenley” was accepted. It w r as decided to forward a donation of 5/- to the Christmas cheer fund for the lepers on the Island of Makogai. Mrs W. Brown and Mrs J. C. Macaulay reported on the Federation meeting held at Waimate. Mrs L. M. West, voluntary organiser, gave an interesting talk on Institute affairs. Mrs A. B. McKenzie explained a quick and effective way to button a mattress and also gave a most comprehensive demonstration of smocking, and exhibited many samples of her work. Mrs E. R. Beckett interested members with a talk on Institutes in the North Island, and also demonstrated the making of two novel cushions. A vote of thanks was passed to the speaker and demonstrators. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames I. Macaulay and W. Stevenson. Health stamps and covers to the value of £1 were sold. Competitions resulted:—Pansies, Miss Ferguson 1, Mrs Glass 2, Mrs Austin 3; rhubarb, Mrs Perry 1 and 2, Mrs Fisher 3; soup plate decorated with flowers, Miss Waters 1, Miss Brown 2, Mrs Austin 3; date scones, Mrs J. C. Macaulay 1. Mrs Austin 2, Mrs W. Brown 3; tea shower, Mrs Glass 1, Miss Austin 2, Mrs Perry 3. PLEASANT POINT The monthly meeting of the Pleasant Point Women’s Institute was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday, Mrs Taylcr presiding. Final arrangements were made for the concert to be held next week. It was decided that the annual picnic be held in conjunction with the gala, 10/- being voted towards prizes for novelty races. Mrs Grocott gave a very interesting talk on “Bolivia,” for which she was accorded a vote of thanks. An instructive demonstration of Christmas novelties was given by Mrs Jackson of Seadown, who was heartily thanked. During the month eggs were sent to the orphanages and magazines, cottons etc., to the lepers at Makogai. The prizes won at the school flower show in the arts and craft section were presented by Mrs Taylor, who congratulated the winners. Wooffindin Cakes and help for the pageant afternoon tea were asked for. OTIPUA The monthly meeting of the Otipua Women’s Institute was held in the hall, Mrs Vincent presiding over a large attendance of members. A letter of appreciation from the Health Stamp Campaign Committee was read. Mrs Mills (St. Andrews) gave a very interesting talk on the forthcoming pageant, for which she was accorded a vote of thanks. Mrs Vincent then called upon Mrs Purvis senr. to make a presentation to two of the Institute’s recent brides, Mrs S. Davison and Mrs E. Porter, for which they suitably replied. After afternoon tea had been served by the hostesses, Mrs Rapsey, Mrs Vincent, Misses Vincent, Watson and Withell. Miss Monica Coughlan read a very interesting report on the halfyearly Federation meeting held in Waimate. Mrs Arden gave a talk on music. Competitions resulted: — Specimen bloom, Mrs R. Campbell 1, Mrs Purvis senr. 2, Mrs Lunham 3; best tulip. Mrs Lunham 1, Miss Smith 2, Mrs R. Campbell 3; something old from something new, Miss Walter 1, Mrs Les Purvis 2, Mrs Black 3.
