WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

GLEN-ITI At the November meeting of the Glen-iti Women’s Institute, Mrs Curr presided and welcomed a number of visitors. Apologies were received from Mesdames Parker, Arras. Loomes, Cain, Peterson, Bower and Miss Loomes. It was unanimously decided to make donations to the Children’s Health Camp and the Lepers of Makogai Mrs Curr offered a prize for the best design for a banner to be judged in December. A very interesting demonstration of spinning was given by Mrs Bockaert. who also displayed garments made from home spun wool. Mrs Pringle demonstrated bouquet making and some very pretty work was displayed. Both demonstrators were accorded a vote of thanks. Competitions resulted. — Specimen bloom: Mrs Curr 1. Mrs Charles presided over a fair attendance at the last meeting of the Arundel Women’s Institute. A letter was received from Miss Hislop thanking the Institute for its help in selling tickets for the concert recently given in Geraldine by the band of the Intsitute for the Blind. The secretary was instructed to send a message of sympathy to Mrs and Miss Hislop in their bereavement, and to Mrs Paterson who is indisposed. Mrs Charles then introduced Miss Davies, who gave a talk on the historical pageant to be held in Timaru in December, explaining the different periods to be represented and displaying the illustrated magazine recently issued on the pageant. Miss Davies was accorded a vote of thanks.

The Institute agreed to help the Health Stamp campaign by buying Health Stamps. It w r as decided to hold the Christmas party in the afternoon this year. Mesdames Wooding and Ambler, delegates to the half-yearly Federation meeting held at Waimate, presented their report and were accorded a vote of thanks. Mrs Pithie gave a very interesting demonstration of poker-work, showing some beautiful specimens of her work. Mrs Charles proposed a vote of thanks to the demonstrator. A musical competition was won by Mrs Charles. The competitions which were judged by Miss Davies, resulted—Three prettiest coat hangers, Mrs Brown 1, Miss D. Johnston 2. Collection of sweets, Mrs Johnston 1, Mrs Brown 2. Best bloom, Miss B. Cormack 1, Miss E. McComb 2. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs McDonald, Misses F. McDonald, and A. Gould.

GERALDINE Miss M* Cruic-kshanks presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Geraldine Women’s Institute held in the Town Hall on Tuesday evening. Motions of sympathy were accorded to Mrs P. W. Hislop and Miss Hislop, Mrs W. J. Couling Mrs Baguley. in the death of relatives. A demonstration of fancy work stitches was given by Mrs Stewart, of Terrmka. who was accorded a vote of thanks. “A sing, say or pay” item proved most amusing and benefited the funds appreciably. Competitions resulted: Best cold sweet, Mrs Mitchelmore 1. Mrs Maister 2. Mrs Stock 3. Best laundered shirt, Mrs Stock 1, Miss J. Vincent 2. Mrs Mitchelmore 3. Specimen bloom, Miss J. Vincent 1, Mrs M. Anderson and Mrs Hayward 2 eaual, Mrs Bennett 3. Supper was provided by Mesdames Tagg, F. E. Whiteley. D. Willcox. C. S. Davies. Day. J. S. Lorimer, T. B. McKinlay, Watson. Misses D. Paterson, D. Maister, M. Cochrane, and G. Charles.
