SHIPPING SUBSIDIES
STRONG OPPOSITION IN AUSTRALIA United Press Association—By Slactns Telegraph—Copyright CANBERRA, September 18. Mr J. A. Lyons (Prime Minister of Australia) said that the Commonwealth Government was opposed to granting subsidies to shipping companies, although it had been necessary to subsidise the service between the mainland and Tasmania. At the proposed conference in London between the Australian and New Zealand Governments and American shipping companies, it was unlikely that the Australian and New Zealand High Commissioners would submit any proposals.
