JAPANESE MISSION

LETTER TO THE MAYOR The Mayor (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite) has received the following letter from the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes):— “Before his departure from New Zealand. Mr Debuchi, the leader of the Japanese Good Will Mission, expressed in very complimentary terms, his appreciation of the spontaneous and cordial reception accorded to him and to the other members of the Mission in the cities and towis he was able to visit during the limited time at his disposal. “That the objects of the Mission have been attained is apparent not only from the farewell message of the Ambassador, but also from statements made by the foreign spokesman of the Japanese Government, Tokyo, and the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tokyo, which have since appeared in our Press. “Such a successful issue is due in no small measure to the valuable cooperation and assistance of local authorities, and on behalf of the Government I desire to express to you, as Mayor of Timaru, appreciation of the manner in which the guests were entertained during their brief stay in Timaru.” Chamber of Commerce A similar letter was received by the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, and it was read at a meeting of the Council of the Chamber last night. The president (Mr G. H. Andrews) said that the dinner to the visitors, organised by the Chamber, passed off successfully, the unfortunate part being that the visitors had so little time here. Mr Debuchi’s main worry seemed to be to get to Christchurch, for he was afraid he might miss his boat. There was one feature about visits to New Zealand of distinguished people from overseas, and that was that they were all rushed through the Dominion. Mr G. D. Virtue extended congratulations to the president on the manner in which he had conducted the dinner.
