“GOLD DIGGERS OF 1935” BRIGHT MUSICAL SPECTACLE “Gold Diggers of 1935,” First National’s latest mammoth musical spectacle, was well received at the Majestic on Saturday. The story carries more unique and unusual numbers, greater song hits and more hilarious fun than any other musical produced by this company. The story is a rollicking comedy with three separate love tangles. There is a play within the play, a wealthy widow producing a milk fund show at a fashionable summer hotel. Dick Powell and Gloria Stuart have the romantic leads, with Frank McHugh and Dorothy Dare in a semicomic love affair and Glenda Farrell. Alice Brady has the role of the rich widow who is bilked of a considerable fortune by a theatrical producer, a part played by Adolphe Menjou, Joseph Cawthorn in the role of a scenic artist and the hotel manager, Grant Mitchell. Winifred Shaw, the former musical comedy stage star, sings in the show. Dick Powell also sings catchy airs which were written by the famous song team of Warren and Dubin. Roscoe Kams, Hobart Cavanaugh and Dean Jagger are in the supporting cast. “Wings in the Dark” deals with an aviator’s heroic efforts to make flying safe for everyone. Just as his experiments in blind flying and radio control are about to succeed, he is temporarily blinded in an accident. With the aid of the girl who loves him, he fights his way back and carries on his experiments, although he fears that he has lost his sight forever. In the gripping dramatic climax, he flies a plane to save the life of the girl and regains his sight to see the triumph of his work. Roscoe Kams, Hobart Cavanaugh and Dean Jagger play the principal featured roles of “Wings in the Dark.”
