At a meeting of the executive of the South Island Miniature Rifle Executive, held in Timaru last Tuesday night, it was decided to hold the South Island Championship at Timaru on August 3. The competition for the Wally Best Inter-club Shield is keen. Timaru and West End are equal with 4 wins each, and it will be interesting to see what happens when they meet. Fire Brigade is not .far away with three wins and a draw 7 . Pleasant Point is shooting exceptionally well this year, the average being 79.4 last week. The average for the month has been exactly 79 for their best 10 men. which is brilliant Waimate with 78.6 and Willowbridge witn just a fraction under 78.4 are also outstanding. Several of the other clubs are shooting well but a bad shoot during the month brought their average down. Some of the Gleniti Ladies shot at Winchester last week and made good scores. They were Miss M. Stewart 80, Miss Ede 80, Miss Taylor 79, Miss B. Stuart 77 and Miss A. O’Brien 76. This is an average of 78.2. Some should figure in the South Island Championship. This is the first year that the South Island Championship will be run under the jurisdiction of the South Island Association. Previously the Timaru Association has carried it out. The five-bull target is to be used but the 9 bull target has been recommended for next year. There are five prizes for women’s matches. The positions of the Individual shooters in the Wally Best inter-club shoot are C. Paine (Gleniti), 2 down, C. Blackwood (West End), 4 down, T. Marshall (Gleniti), 5 down, A. The result was a win for Pleasant Point by 780 points to 779. One of the features of miniature shooting in South Canterbury Is the great number of good women shots. The Orari Bridge Ladies were too much for the Woodbury men beating them by 13 points. W. Scott seems to be the most reliable shot in the Railway Club. J. Douglas of Pareora is coming to the front with his shooting. J. Gregan of Pleasant Valley has struck form. F. Grayson, of Hook, a young shot, is making a name for himself. A. Bone, of Gleniti, is one of the outstanding sjjpts in the district at present. The following are the club averages for the week.
