FAIRLIE

FOOTBALL The Mackenzie Sub-Union’s competition was continued in fine but cold weather. In the junior grade, Sherwood defeated Fairlie at Fairlie by 18 points to nil. Mr J. Burgess was referee. In the senior grade, Fairlie journeyed to Cave, and after a hard fought game defeated the home team by 11 points to 3. Mr C. Guthrie was referee. At Fairlie, Southern (Albury) defeated Aorangi by 12 points to 6. Aorangi were not at full strength, but this does not detract from Southern’s victory, as they were definitely superior. Aorangi won the toss and played from the western end. From a line-out Perry sent to Rich, who lined in the Aorangi 25. Good passing by the Southern backs had Aorangi pressed till Quill effected a good save. Trotter made a strong run to Southern’s 25, but offside allowed Simpson to clear. Southern were penalised, but Sims failed with the kick. From the dropout Manning and Cox took play past half-way, and good passing by Perry, Rich, Bracken and Ross ended in Rich coming round to score a fine try in the corner. Simpson missed the kick. Southern 3, Aorangi 0. Passing by the Blue backs was checked by Rich. O’Sullivan led the Yellow forwards to the Aorangi 25, but offside allowed Sims to clear to neutral ground. Robertson checked a solid forward rush by Southern, and Trotter was prominent in a strong run to the Yellows’ 25, but a good forward rush led by Good and Perry saw play return to the Blue 25. A solo effort by Edge gained 50 yards, but a good loose rush by the Southern forwards saw Elliott score wide out. Simpson missed with the kick. Southern 6, Aorangi 0. Aorangi immediately attacked, but Bracken snapped up and broke through, a forward pass checking a good move. Trotter put Aorangi on attack. Rich’s kick was charged down and Edge followed up to score near the nosts. Sims missed an easy kick. Southern 6, Aorangi 3. From a scrum in the Blue 25 Perry cut round the blind side and sent Besley over for a good try. Southern 9, Aorangi 3. Good work by the Yellow forwards saw play in the Blue 25. Moran cleared nicely to near half-way, but Southern came back in a solid rush, play going to the Blue line, where a scrum was ordered. Southern were penalised, and a well-judged return by Rich saw E. Perry gather in nicely to save. Rogers missed the kick. Southern 12, Aorangi 3. Brooks put Aorangi on attack, but Rich returned. A great run by Trotter was spoilt Dy a forward pass. Southern were penalised, and Trotter landed a fine goal just before time was called.

Southern 12, Aorangi 6. Mr E. Empson was referee.
