It was decided to hold a drama festival at Pleasant Point on September 5, all the Institutes in the group to be asked to compete. A paper on the work and rules of the depot was read by Miss Begg, for which she was accorded a vote of thanks. Community quilts for the Relief Depot, made by the Group Institutes, were judged by Miss Begg, who awarded the first prize to Rosewill and second to Tycho. Mrs Taylor, who had given the prize, then presented the Rosewill Institute with a handsome brass bell. It was decided to ask the Fairview Women’s Institute to join this group. MACKENZIE GROUP An interesting and enjoyable afternoon was spent in the Parish Hall, when Institute members from Fairlie f.-'d surrounding districts gathered to witness the “sing-off” for the South Canterbury Federation choir contest. The group each year sends its winningteam to sing in the finals held in Timaru in conjunction with the arts and crafts exhibition in June. This year only two choirs competed, Sherwood and Fairlie. The capable manner in which the various selections were given reflects much credit on the conductors and personnel of both entrants. Sherwood proved the -winners and with the aid of the constructive criticism offered by the judges, should make a good showing in the forthcoming contest. Mrs Barn as. president of the Fairlie Y 'omen’s Institute, expressed the thanks of the group to Mrs Tait and Mrs Mangos, of Timaru, who had so capably carried out the duties of judges. The meeting showed its appreciation of the trouble they had taken by according them a vote of thanks. Pianoforte items given by Mrs ManI gos, and vocal numbers by Mrs Ballantyne, also of Timaru. delighted all present. An enjoyable social half-hour was spent, afternoon tea being provided by the Fairlie Institute committee. EALING Mrs J. Withell presided over a small attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Ealing Women’s Institute. Final arrangements for the evening meeting, which is to take the form of a lantern lecture on gardening, were made. It was decided that the home science lectures which the Institute recently bought, be lent to neighbouring Institutes if they wanted them. The hostesses were Mesdames Gidding, J. Mackenzie and B. Withell.
