WOMEN’S DIVISION
HOOK BRANCH Last week a meeting was held in the Hook Hall to discuss the formation of a branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Mrs B. E. Evans, provincial president, outlined the work of the Division since its inception. The first meeting was held in Wellington more than 10 years ago, when 12 farmers’ wives from all over New Zealand banded themselves together in order to try to alleviate the hardships of their sisters in the backblocks. To these women be*ged the honour of being the founders of the original housekeeping scheme, the only one of its kind, and one which had brought happiness and comfort to hundreds of farm homes. This fact, along with the desire to help the Farmers’ Union, must make . apparent the necessity of every farmer’s wife joining the organisation, and 'furthering the work in all country district:. On the motion of Mrs Simmons, seconded by Mrs Rose, it was decided to form a branch, and the following offic3rs were elected: President, Mrs J. Rooney; secretary and treasurer, Mrs Rose; advisory member, Mrs MacPherson; vice-president, Mrs Henderson; competitions, Mrs Tiffen; committee, Mesdames Wilkin, Simmonds, Jones, Stewart, with power to add. The next meeting will be held on the first Thursday in June, when a demonstration on preparing a fowl for the table will be given by Mrs Cloke. Musical items and competitions will also be given. Members were asked to make peggy squares for a quilt for some necessitous case. Miss Moyle (Timaru provincial secretary), Mrs Alty (vice-president, Waimate) and Miss Bitchener (secretary, Waimate), along with other members of that branch, attended the meeting, and wished the Hook branch success. Afternoon tea was served and the meeting closed.
