MARRED BY FATAL ACCIDENTS DESTROYERS COLLIDE IN DARKNESS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received May 13, 5.5 p.m.) HONOLULU, May 12. Two fatal accidents marred the naval operations in Hawaiian waters. Lieutenant Mathias Wyatt was drowned when the aeroplane he was piloting dived into the ocean after taking off from the deck of U.S.S. Saratoga and sank without leaving a trace. Richard Chadwick, gunner’s mate, was killed and three sailors were injured when the destroyers, Sicard and Lea collided during a night patrol against a mythical submarine attack. The Sicard tore into the Lea’s stern. Prompt Salvage Efforts. Prompt action by the Damage Control Officer saved the Lea from sinking, and enabled her to proceed into harbour under her own power. The Sicard was towed by a mine sweeper. The Lea cut almost into the Sicard’s wardroom quarters.
