ROCKWOOD SCHOOL

JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS In order to commemorate the King’s Silver Jubilee in a fitting manner, the parents and friends of the pupils attending the Rockwood School gathered together on Friday afternoon. The children were assembled by their teacher (Miss Todd) and after the saluting of the flag and the singing of the National Anthem, Mr McPherson introduced Major Johnson, who gavn the address, which was listened to with keen interest. The Jubilee tree was then planted by several of the pupils, Major Johnson reminding them of the history of the beech tree. Maureen G. Allen, as senior pupil, recited “Trees” and “The Twins.” A slab of wood sawn from a tree which was planted in Mr H. Gould’s orchard on the occasion of Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee, was suitably inscribed and placed beside the tree. An adjournment was then made to the school which was decorated with red, white and blue flowers. The ladies of the district provided afternoon tea which was much appreciated. During a suitable interval Mrs Johnson was presented with a bouquet of roses and mignonette by Maureen G. Allen, on behalf of the pupils. In the near future the children are to be presented with .souvenir booklets.

Before dispersing Mr McPherson thanked Major Johnson for his generosity in presenting the tree and the flagpole, and also all those who had come along to make the function the success it undoubtedly was.
