SOUTH CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION The South Canterbury Basketball Association held its monthly meeting on Friday evening. Present: Mr J. C. Hayhurst (presiding), Mesdames H. V. O’Connor, J. C. Hayhurst, L. Templeton and H. Hoskins, and Misses H. K. Lovell-Smith, N. Pearce, M. Mayo, A. Malthus and A. Brooks. The president reported that he had attended games at Geraldine, at which the formation of a sub-association for that district had been informally discussed. Miss Lovell-Smith reported that the Timaru Sub-Association had opened its season with a Yankee tournament. Through Miss Lovell-Smith, the budget sub-committee reported having prepared a financial estimate for the season’s working. The approximate amount required was £67. As delegate to the inaugural meeting of the New Zealand Basketball Referees’ Association, Mrs Hayhurst reported that it would be necessary for a South Canterbury Referees’ Association, co-ordinating the work of the local referees’ associations, to be formed before recognition could be granted South Canterbury referees by the new body. It was decided that a South Canterbury Referees’ Association be formed, each local referees’ association now in existence being eligible to representation by two delegates. The president was appointed to represent the Association on the new body. Arrangements for the King’s birthday tournament were made, it being decided to advise the North Otago and Ashburton Associations as well as all sub-associations of the conditions. The tournament is to be played in two grades and it was agreed to request sub-associations to provide referees. Mrs Hayhurst was appointed sole selector of the representative team. After consideration, a remit from the Otaio Sub-Association concerning the South Canterbury Association arranging sub-association representative games was held over until the next meeting. The Timaru Basketball Sub-Associ-ation’s competition matches were continued on Saturday. Results:— First Grade. Technical Old Girls A 18, McKenzies 2.
