PREFERENCE TO BRITAIN The Moscow Narodny Bank, London, reports that the orders placed in Great Britain by Soviet trading organisations in February of the current year amounted to £1,121,282, as compared with £902,863 for the same month last year. The total value of the orders placed in the first two months was £1,827,690, as compared with £1,318,649 for the corresponding period in 1934, an increase of 38.6 per cent. In February of this year 53 vessels were chartered on the London market by the Anglo-Soviet Shipping Company, Limited, of which number 42 were British. The total tonnage chartered in February was 306,420 tons, of which 231,036 were British, and the total sum involved is estimated at £197,818, of which £141,818 will go to British owners. In February, 1934, only 25 vessels were chartered of 188.650 tons, and involving a sum of £129,286 on the London market. Of these 19 vessels of 147,630 tons were British, and the sum received by British owners was £103,583. In the first two months of this year the company has chartered on the London market 79 vessels of 494.075 tons, and the freight is estimated at £337.259. Of this total 57 vessels of 338,741 tons were British and the amount due to British owners is estimated at £221,993. In the first two months of 1934 only 44 vessels were chartered, of which 27 were British, and out of a total amount of £216.038 paid in freights £147,735 was received by British owners. The number of British chartered this year has thus more than doubled, while the amount of freight as shown an increase of more than 50 per cent. , The above figures for the current year do not include ten British vessels that have been fixed on a time charter In February, while no foreign fixtures have been arranged.
