PRODUCE MARKETS

SOUTH CANTERBURY As this is the off season of the year, there has been very little business passing in the South Canterbury grain and produce markets. The main line cf interest has been potatoes. Digging is now becoming fairly general, and this may have a tendency to weaken the market. The last ship from this port took between 7000 and 10,000 sacks, and if too big shipments are sent, the market Will ease. Whites are quoted at £4/15/- on trucks and Suttons at £5. The wheat market has been lifeless. This month’s quotations are Tusman 4/2, Hunters 4/4 and Velvet 4/6, all f.o.jj. There has been a fair inquiry for fowl wheat at 3/11 on trucks. Oats. —A Gartons are quoted at 2/10 on trucks and B’s at 2/7. Algerians are quoted at 2/5 and Duns at 3/3 to 3/6, according to quality. Peas. —No. 1 Partridge peas are quoted at 5/9 to 6/- according to stations. So far there has been no export demand. Barley—Chevalier and Cape barley are quoted at 3/- on trucks and Black barley at 4/-, but there has been no inquiry. Chaff. —Good, bright o.s. is quoted at £3/2/6 to £3/5/- on trucks, but the market is quiet. I *nseed. —The present quotation for linseed is £l2 a ton on trucks. Seeds. —The seeds market is usually slack at this period, and during the week there has been no change in prices. Ryegrass is quoted at 2/9 on trucks, Western Wolth and Italian at 2/9, white clover at 8d to 9d per lb, and cowgrass at Bd. FAIRLIE STOCK SALE The fortnight stock sale was held in the saleyards on Tuesday. The entry of 2400 was considered good. There was a large attendance of buyers and

satisfactory prices were realised. Fat wethers brought from 18/- to 24/-, fat ewes from 12/6 to 18/-, fat lambs from 14/- to 20/-, store ewe lambs up to 16/6, m.s. lambs to 12/6, wether lambs 7/- to 9/-, store wethers up to 18/-, old ewes from 8/- to 11/6, and weaner pigs from 5/- to 9/-.
