WOMEN’S DIVISION

PLEASANT POINT BRANCH The annual meeting of the Pleasant Point branch of the W.D.F.U. was held in the Town Hall, Mrs Ley presiding over a fair attendance of members. An apology for absence was received from Mrs Chapman. Miss J. Miller was elected a member. The treasurer read the financial statements, which were considered very satisfactory.

In her annual report the president said that the branch had been In operation for three years and had a membership of 47 and one junior. Pleasant Point had lost several members owing to two new branches having been formed in the adjoining district. Very interesting addresses had been given by Mrs Smillie on the care of poultry, Mrs Evans on the Dominion Conference. Mr Crosbie on the advantages of Fire Insurance and of supporting the Farmers’ Union, Miss Cargill on the half-yearly conference held at Christchurch. also on the need for improving the quality of our dairy produce; and Miss Oliver on gardening notes. A special meeting had been held to hear Mr Cossins, who gave advice on the culling, housing and general management of poultry. Demonstrations were given by Mrs Taylor on the preservation of autumn leaves for winter decoration. and on the making of wreaths and floral sprays. Two play readings had been given, and had been very much enjoyed by those present. Donations had been given towards sending a delegate to the Dominion Conference, also towards three orphanages and the Community Chest. In December the W.D. had joined the F.U. in an excursion to Lincoln College. Early in August members had accepted an invitation from the Pleasant Point Women’s Institute to attend its birthday party, which had been most enjoyable. A successful dance had been held in July in aid of the funds. Mrs Ward, the Dominion President, who was on a short visit to South Canterbury, was present at one meeting, and members had been very pleased to meet her. A very enjoyable social evening had been held early in November to celebrate the third anniversary of the branch. Thanks were accorded to “The Timaru Herald,” and Mr C. F. Allen, of Waitohi, for auditing the books.

The report and balance sheet were adopted. Before leaving the chair the president thanked the committee and retiring officers for their work during the year. On her retirement from office Miss Oliver presented Mrs Ley with a crystal vase as a mark of the members’ esteem and appreciation of her services during her years of office. Officers were elected as follows: President, Miss Oliver; vice-presidents, Mesdames Ley and Gardiner; secretary, Mrs P. D. Roberts; correspondence secretary, Mrs Crombie; treasurer, Mrs Cunningham; advisory members, Mrs C. Chapman and Miss Maze; market delegates, Mesdames E. Oliver and P. D. Roberts; committee, Mesdames Watson, Crombie, Kingston, E. Oliver, Cunningham, Lyon, Mcllwrick, Chapman, Connell, and Miss Maze.

Mesdames E. Oliver, Campbell and Crombie were appointed delegates to the Provincial Executive and Mrs Kingston was appointed to arrange for hostesses for meetings.

After some discussion it was decided to hold another meeting to complete arrangements for the forthcoming fancy-dress dance. Results of competitions were; Best bloom, Mrs Lyon; tomato sauce, Miss D. Lyon; nut loaf, Mrs Lyon. The hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Oldham and Cartwright. Miss Garland, school nurse, agreed to address the next meeting of the Division.
