TRIAL OF ACCUSED By Telegraph —Press Association WELLINGTON, May 7. Allegations that Maurice William Baker, commercial artist, obtained sums amounting to £2OO from Moyle, a retired solicitor, by false pretences, were made in a case in the Supreme Court, in which Baker was charged with obtaining two cheques by false pretences, also with theft. Moyle answered an advertisement inserted in the press by the accused m order to provide a position for a young man, who had been in his employ, and interviewed the accused, who, it was stated represented that he had a car practically his own property, and was practically debt free, but required capital. The young man was taken on at £3 a week, and Moyle advanced £IOO. and later another £IOO to enable the accused to buy shares in Woolworths at a price below the market price. It was alleged that accused used all the money within six weeks to pay debts, the accused not having trsclosed that he owed over £2OO to moneylenders, and that the car was subject to a bill of sale.
