PLEASANT POINT

MEETING OF TOWN BOARD GENERAL BUSINESS The monthly meeting of the Pleasant Point Town Board was attended by Commissioners M. F. Maze (chairman), O. H. Roberts, J. Dossett, E. Halstead, T. Kelliher, H. Christie and A. Dawson. Regarding the driving of cattle along Halstead Street between the hours of noon and 1.30 p.m., the South Canterbury Stock Auctioneers’ Association wrote stating that it would do its best to have drovers comply with the bylaw. The secretary of the local branch of the Farmers' Union forwarded rents due. Correspondence with regard to the celebrations in connection with the King’s Jubilee was read. Crs. Kelliher and Roberts said that in a small centre like Pleasant Point, it was advisable to concentrate on the children. Cr. Christie said he thought that a Jubilee Ball would be a success, any proceeds to be devoted to local improvements. Other councillors thought that, if a ball was held, it should be made as cheap as possible, so that as many people as possible could attend. A deputation, consisting of Mrs Taylor, Mr W. B. Obom, chairman, and Mr J. J. McGuigan of the District High School, waited upon the Board and explained what the school committee proposed doing. Mr Oborn said that it was proposed to hold a function at the school on the Friday, when the flag would be saluted and trees would be planted to mark the occasion. An appropriate address would be delivered by a suitable person. Should the Board express any wish for help in connection with the celebrations, the committee would be prepared to fall in with it.

After a discussion in which it was considered inadvisable to endeavour to do anything in a big way, as people generally went to the bigger centres on such occasions, it was agreed to approve the school committee’s programme, and not to arrange for any other celebrations. Mr T. Black, Levels County engineer, forwarded particulars of the tar sealing contract of the Pleasant Point portion of the Main Mackenzie Highway. The chairman said that the Board's portion of the cost of the first coat would be £216 8s 2d, and the Highway Board would find £649 4s 9d. The cost of the second coat to the Board would be about £137 16s Bd, the Highway Board finding £413 10s 2d.

The Timaru Borough Council, as collecting authority, forwarded a cheque for £6l 17s, the Town Board’s share of heavy traffic fees. It was decided to hold a special meeting on May 14 to discuss estimates for the year.

The Library Committee wrote asking if the Board would make a further grant of £s.—Owing to the state of the finances, particularly in connection with the Main Highway, the grant was declined.

The hall caretaker’s report was read and adopted. Owing to ill health he wished to be relieved of his duties. Mr Nolan was appointed caretaker, and Mr Wells was thanked for his loyal services.

The treasurer reported that after payment of accounts, £236 would remain in the bank.

The Women’s Institute, through Mrs Taylor, asked if the Board would be prepared to assist in making improvements to the Coronation Memorial. It was suggested that a low fence would be erected round the stone and the inside brightened with flowers. The Institute would keep it in order. Cr. Kelliher questioned whether the Railway Department would approve a fence being erected, as they had previously refused permission. The matter was held in abeyance pending an inspection of the situation.

Messrs W. Crawford and R. Turnbull, representing the townspeople, waited upon the Board and asked that the chimes of the town clock be repaired and put in commission. The spokesmen assured the Board that this could be done at a very small cost. The chairman assured the deputation that their wishes would receive every consideration, as their request was a very reasonable one.

Sitting as a Domain Board, a request from the Timaru Technical College for permission to hold a picnic at the Domain was granted, and it was decided to provide boilers and firewood. The Football Club was granted the use of the Domain for the season at the usual fee.

A deputation from the Club waited upon the meeting and discussed a proposal to light the ground with flood lights. The matter was held over pending further particulars.

ANGLING Mr Arthur Gosling landed a fine bag from the Opihi river, at Raincliff, on Tuesday. He was successful in catching the “limit.” A beautiful 10pounder, an equaly nice five-pounder, and several three pounders were among perhaps the best bag taken during the season. MINIATURE RIFLES The first official shoot of the Pleasant Point Club was held on Wednesday night. G. Henderson won the Wilson gold bullet with 15 consecutive bulls.
