TENNIS

PLAY IN BOURNEMOUTH TOURNAMENT United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, April 30. The Bournemouth hard-court tennis championships were continued to-day. Both the New Zealand Davis Cup players, A. C. Stedman and C. E. Malfroy, were defeated. Critics express the opinion that Perry’s game has improved. Despite Malfroy’s continued attack, Perry counter-attacked, forcing his opponent into many errors. Perry was so much the master that he was able to use any shot.

Austin was shaky against Stedman, and was down 1-4 in the first set. The New Zealander pulled up from 2-5 to 5-5 in the second set, hitting so well that Austin occasionally only had time to lob. Austin, in the third set, vigorously went for winners, and outlasted his opponent. The “Daily Express” says that Miss Dorothy Round may have to scratch from the Bournemouth tournament. She won her singles matches to-day, but suffered from a leg muscle, which she strained last week. Following are the results:— Men’s Singles Second Round: H. W. Austin beat A. C, Stedman (N.Z.), 6-4, 7-5, 6-1. F. J. Perry beat C. E. Malfroy (N.Z.), 6- 6-3, 6-2. D. D. Prenn (Germany) beat V. G. Kirby (South Africa), 6-3, 6-3, 6-1. Women’s Singles Second Round: Miss D. Round beat Miss Riddell, 7- 6-1. Miss M. C. Scriven beat Mrs Strawson, 6-2, 6-2. Mrs H. C. Hopman beat Miss Scott, 8- 4-6, 6-3. Women’s Doubles First Round: Mrs Hopman and Miss Ford, beat Mi's Houlder and Miss Maynard, 6-1, 6-3.
