Mr R. A. Wilkie, Otipua Road, returned to Timaru yesterday after a visit to Melbourne and Sydney. Advice has been received from Wellington that Mr Eric Hedley of Timaru has been successful in passing his examination in radio telegraphy. Recent arrivals at the Empire include: Messrs R. J. H. Miller, J. O’Brien, H. G. Eckhoff, C. Jarvis, N. C. Hale (Dunedin), F. Pannell, N. E. McCausland (Christchurch). The retirement from the Army of General Sir Howard Vyse, who was head of the Duke of Gloucester’s staff on the tour of New Zealand and Australia, is gazetted in London. Guests at the Grosvenor include: Messrs A. J. Denys, A. E. Talbot (Christchurch), R. C. Murie (Wellington), L. Newton (Ashburton), L. Wilson, A. Andrews (Dunedin), Dr. A. Kidd (Waipiata). Senior-Sergeant I. Mathieson (Port Chalmers). Sergeant J. Hodgson iFrankton), and Detective L. Studholme (Christchurch) are visiting Timaru to attend the police inquiry which opened in Timaru yesterday. Mr W. L. Wybert, managei; of the National Bank of New Zealand at Invercargill, who has been transferred to the head office in Wellington, was presented by clients of the bank on Tuesday with a wallet of notes. Messrs A. D. Martin, E. T. Beaven (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs P. R. Roberts and Master Rex Roberts, Master Jarvis Johnson, Mr W. A. Hetherington (Dunedin) and Mr F. J. Kent are staying at the Dominion. A visitor to Timaru recently after a lapse of many years was Mr J. L. Conlan (Auckland). Mr Conlan was connected with the legal firm of White and Alpers (the late Mr Justice O. T. J. Alpers) in Timaru about 1907. After a short visit to Timaru, he left yesterday for Oamaru. The Rev. H. Nelson Wright, of St. Peter’s Church, Akaroa, has been awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officer’s Decoration and has been commanded to attend a reception at Government House, Wellington, by Lord Galway in connection wfith the King’s jubilee celebrations on-Monday, May 6, to receive the decoration from the Governor-General. Eighty-eight years of age and the senior bishop of the Anglican community, Archbishop Julius yesterday celebrated his forty-fifth anniversary of his consecration. “An old stick” he calls himself, but anyone meeting him and knowing him, would call him one of the great men of the world.
