MEETING OF HOCKEY SUB-ASSOCIATION YEAR REVIEWED The president (Mr A. Mackay presided at the annual meeting of the Geraldine County Hockey Sub-Associa-tion. In presenting the annual report, the president stated that although the year had not proved a financial success, it had been a success from the hockey point of view. Everyone would congratulate the Temuka team on its win in the men’s section. The Geraldine Ladies’ Club was also to be congratulated on winning the ladies’ section. Representative games had been played against South Canterbury and Ashburton, the Geraldine Association winning the former but losing the latter. The Association’s ladies' representative team played South Canterbury at Temuka, the game resulting in a draw. The visit of the Australians to Geraldine created a great deal of interest among hockey players and enthusiasts. The forthcoming visit of the Indian team to play South Canterbury should be an incentive to Geraldine players to practise hard and to endeavour ‘ o secure a place in the South Canterbury team. The Association congratulated those players who had represented Geraldine in the representative match at Dunedin, and there was no reason why come of them should not be selected to play against the Indians, provided they trained steadily for a place. An intimation was received that a Woodbury team would probably be playing in the competition this year. V letter was received from the secretary of the South Canterbury Hockey t sociation inquiring whether a game against Geraldine could be arranged at Geraldine on Monday. The president and Messrs J. Webb and T. J. Paterson were appointed a deputation to wait on the Jubilee Committee to ascertain if such a match could be included in the Committee’s programme. YOUNG WOMANS DEATH - Mrs Margaret May Veitch. wife of Mr Roy Veitch, of 40 Bligh’s Road, Papanui, Christchurch, died suddenly at her residence early on Tuesday morning. Mrs Veitch, w’ho was in her twenty-fith year, was formerly Miss Margaret Johnston, a daughter of Mr P. F. and the late Mrs Johnston, of Peel Forest. Mrs Veitch had been married only 13 months, and had not been ill during that time. Mrs Veitch entertained friends at h._- home on Monday evening. After ti y had left she lay down on a couch and became ill. Her husband applied hot packs, but about 3.15 am. on Tuesday she died. An inquest was opened before Mr H. A. Young on Tuesday afternoon, and after evidence of identification had been taken, was adjourned to allow a post mortem examination to be made. BASKETBALL CLUB

A meeting of the committee of the Geraldine Basketball Club was held in the Town Hall on Tuesday evening. Donations from Mr A. W. Tucker, and Mesdames J. Kelman and J. H. Lewis were acknowledged with thanks. The treasurer reported that there was £3/5/- in hand, but outstanding accounts totalled nearly this amount, and the payment of all subscriptions at an early date was necessary. The secretary of the Temuka and District Basketball Sub-Association wrote giving information regarding the • ening day. It was decided that as many players as possible should attend. Miss Edith Waters was elected a member of the club. The captain reported that a second grade game against High School Old Girls had been arranged for to-day, while the third grade teams were drawn to play each other. It was decided that the election of captains would take place before the games. On behalf of the dance committee, Miss Joan Lapthorn reported that arrangements were proceeding satisfactorily. It was decided to ask all basketball players to provide baskets, and Miss Turner offered to give some sandwiches. It was decided to commenced practices next Tuesday, players to be levied o : penny a night and Miss Jessie Cowie to be in charge. It was decided to add Miss C. M. Turner’s name to the list of referees. For the grounds committee. Miss Mona Barrett reported on the rough state of the grounds and the necessity for filling in the lines. The matter was left to the club captain to act in conjunction with the grounds committee. The possibility of obtaining an asphalt playing areas was discussed, but it was decided that the subject was beyond the club’s reach until more funds were in hand. CRIBBAGE ASSOCIATION The second round of the Geraldine and District Cribbage Association’s competition resulted as follows: Citizens 30 beat Raukapuka 19; Bowlers 28 beat South End 22; Oddfellows 34 beat Orari Bridge 17. The scores to date are as follow: Oddfellows 58, Bowlers 57, Citizens 57, South End 44, Raukapuka 40, Orari Bridge 38. In the Williamson Memorial Cup competition G. W. Coombs and D. Macdonald (Citizens) lead with 19 games from C. Stock and J. R. Lack 'Bowlers), and S. H. Lapthorn and L. Whiting (Oddfellows) with 17 games. Individual scores were as follow:

FOOTBALL The president (Mr W. H. Jackson) presided at a meeting of the committee of the Geraldine Football Club. Present: Messrs F. Lawson, I. Anderson, L. Neutze, J. Cairns, J. Stevenson, H. South, H. Wilson, E. Wood and A. H. Stringer. An apology was received from Mr P. M. McKenzie. The South Canterbury Rugby Union wrote that a grant for a proposed shower at Geraldine, was not available owing to lack of funds. The secretary was instructed to write to Mr M. Bell, thanking him for a donation. At the conclusion of the meeting, members of the fourth and senior grade teams met and a much appreciated team talk was held, the speakers being Messrs I. MINIATURE RIFLES There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Pleasant Valley I -*dies’ Miniature Rifle Club. The annual report, which showed that the club had experienced a very satisfactory year, and the balance-sheet were adopted. A vote of thanks was passed to all donors of trophies and to the retiring secretary (Mr J. Gregan). Officers were elected as follows: Patron, Mr B. R. Macdonald; president. Mrs F. Hughes; secretary, Miss E. Hughes; club captain, Mrs T. Hughes; vice-capiain .Miss D. Fawdray; armourer, Miss G. Gregan; target tester, Mrs G. Tiplady; handicappers, Misses G. Tiplady and E. Hughes; rifle tester, Mr G. Gregan. Subscriptions were fixed at 7 6, and at 5/- for two or more in one family. It was decided to hold the shoots on Tuesday evenings.
