UNEMPLOYMENT

'TIMARU COMMITTEE MEETS The Timaru Unemployment Committee met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite) chairman, the Rev. Father M. A. Murphy, S.M., the Revs. J. Milburn Stewart, Clyde Carr, M.P., Messrs G. T. Koller, E. G. Cliffin, M. Little, H. J. Mathers, J. McCort, J. G. Leckie, A. Moore and P. B. Foote. A circular was received from the Unemployment Board stating that it had been decided to make allowances to unemployed with dependents between the ages of 16 and 20 years, who were not in work. Th Mayor said the committee could congratulate itself on having put the matter forward. It showed that the committee could do some good after all. They had persistently, as a matter of justice, brought the question before the Minister, and it was pleasing to know that he had seen the wisdom of giving effect to what was a very reasonable request. The secretary stated that 30 unemployed in Timaru would benefit by the decision. Mr Koller said that since last meeting of the committee a conference of certifying officers had been held, and the certifying officer for Timaru had attended. Was any information regarding that conference available? He considered that, as the committee had been set up to assist the certifying officer in his work, they should have had the opportunity of marking suggestions to him for consideration at that conference. The chairman said the certifying officers had attended the conference as representatives of those who were employing them, and the committee was not entitled to make any suggestions to them. No information regarding the result of the conference was available. The Timaru Ministers’ Association wrote advising that tne Rev. J. Russell Grave had been appointed its representative on the committee.
