TEMUKA

TECHNICAL SCHOOL BOARD MONTHLY MEETING The Board of Managers of the Temuka Technical School met on Monday. Present: Messrs J. T. Smart (in the chair), L. G. Scrimshaw, C. L. Fraser, A. E. Smith, J. O. J. Oliver, and the director (Mr E. B. Cooper). The Education Board advised that it had not yet considered the application for a grant toward the cost of the installation of electric light, but would do so and advise. No subsidy on the cost of material for classes was available. Mr Smith said that as schools were charged only for what they used, he thought that the school committee would favourably consider the installation. If the Technical Board could see its way to grant £3/10/-, half the cost, they might be able to proceed with the installation. He doubted whether the Education Board would grant a subsidy toward the installation. The chairman said that with the state of the Technical Board’s finances it would not be practicable to make any offer. Members pointed out that if the lectures proposed developed the lighting would be needed. The Board would assist if it could see that prospects warranted that course. It wt decided to take no further action i 'til the Boards reply was received. v The Education Board also advised that the fees for a class in veterinary treatment would be 30/- a pupil for a year, and the payment for a lecturer 5/10 an hour. The director reported that he had had only one inquiry regarding the class. It was left to the director to arrange a definite evening for an address on the subject by Mr A. M. Paterson. The chairman said he would like to see classes in other subjects, and it was left to him to endeavour to make arrangements for a series of lectures on a subject of popular appeal. Mr Fraser suggested that the chairman should interview the Timaru Radio Club with a view to arranging lectures. The director reported that there were 13 pupils attending the woolclassing class. HOUSEHOLDERS’ MEETING The annual meeting of householders was held on Monday evening, Mr A. E. Smith presiding over an attendance of 16. The annual report, previously published, was read and the balance-sheet showing a credit of £6B 5s 6d, with an account for £lO 5s 4d outstanding for library books was read by the treasurer (Mr W. J. Clark). The year had commenced with a credit of £6B 14s 9d. The adoption of the report and balance-sheet was moved by the chairman, seconded by the secretary (Mr E. B. Cooper) and carried without discussion. The chairman said that as the committee had been elected for two years there would be no election of members. He would like all present to be at the King's Jubilee celebrations function on May 10 at the school. It was intended then to plant the jubilee tree in commemoration of the event and to present the books that had been purchased for the children. A vote of thanks to the headmaster and staff was moved by Mr J. T. Smart who said he was pleased to find that the school was maintaining its reputation for success in public examinations, in sport and in the Hurdley Shield competition. He had never seen the front of the school looking in better condition. In reply, the headmaster said that there had been a great many more things that counted accomplished as well as the passing of examinations and winning of games. He was sorry to say that the attendance had dropped, and that teachers had been lost in the primary department. Fortunately the secondary department had not yet suffered a reduction in staff. It would be disastrous if the staff were reduced in that department, for it would mean that the present wide range of courses would have to be curtailed. Votes of thanks were also passed to the janitor, the school committee and the newspapers. At a meeting of the committee it was unanimously agreed that the executive officers retain their positions for the year, and that the meetings again he held on the second Tuesday in the month.
