GERALDINE

ANNUAL MEETING OF HOUSEHOLDERS SMALL ATTENDANCE Probably owing to the fact that no election would be held, as the Geraldine District high School Committee had served only half of its two-year term, there was a small attendance at the annual meeting of householders on Monday evening, the chairman (Mr A. J. Burmester) presiding. The chairman, who expressed his regret that there had not been a larger attendance, explained that the meeting had been called in accordance with instructions from the Education Board in order to maintain interest in the work of the School. Although there would be no election till the twoyear term expired at the end of the forthcoming year, the Board had decided that annual meetings should be held so that the work of the past year could be reviewed.

In referring to the balance-sheet, the chairman said that he would like to point out that two years ago the committee’s grant from the Board was £144/15/-; last year it had been reduced to £l3O/5/-, and for the coming year it was down to £lls. This represented a drop of approximately £3O in the grant in two years. During the year they had kept the expenditure as low as possible, but even then, it cost £154 a year to keep things going. Luckily the revenue received from the carnival would be sufficient to carry on for a further twelve months. Actually it was costing £4O above the grant to meet normal expenditure each year. They were at a disatvantage through having two schools to keep going. The capitation allowance for the secondary department was approximately £ls, but that would not even cover caretaker’s wages. The committee had brought this fact before the Board, and was now awaiting a reply. The chairman also referred to the fact that the School Committee had been called upon to contribute £9 towards the Geraldine Dental Clime’s funds in order to make up a deficit of that amount in the Geraldine quota. There was no reason why the clinic should not be self-supporting, and he thought that those parents who had children receiving treatment who were in a position to afford a contribution, should make a donation to the funds. Mr Burmester referred to the services of the Rev. A. C. Lawry, who had resigned from the committee as he had left the district, and intimated that they had secured the services of Mr A. M. Fyfe, who had a long record of service on past committees to fill the vacancy. The chairman then formally moved the adoption of the report and balance-sheet. The motion, which was seconded by : *r C. J. Hayward, was carried without discussion. In moving that a vote of thanks be accorded to the headmaster (Mr A. W. Tucker) and his staff, Mr A. M. Fyfe remarked that the report spoke volumes for the state of affairs in connection with the work at the School. The motion was seconded by Mr S. J. Lapthom and carried. Mr Tucker said that the £9 which the committee had had to contribute from its funds to meet the deficiency in the Dental Clinic quota had meant that the education of all the pupils had had to suffer to that extent, as otherwise that amount would have been expended on the School. The charge should not fall on the School Committee, and he would like to emphasise that point. In reply to a question by Mrs W. E. Moyle, the chairman intimated that the committee had authority to make a charge of 5/- for the dental treatment given to the children. On the motion of Mr Tucker, who remarked that it did not appear as if the householders appreciated the pub-lic-spiritedness of members of the committee who sacrificed their time in the interest of the School, a vote of thanks was extended to the chairman and the committee. Mr Tucker added that in view of the financial difficulties the committee had experienced, he had kept his requests down as much as possible, but anything he had required urgently for the School the committee had done its utmost to provide. In acknowledging the motion, Mr Burmester remarked that the members of the committee had worked well together, and they had endeavoured to meet Mr Tucker in whatever the committee could afford. Mr Tucker had been very reaspnable in his requests, and the committee had done its best to meet him. He appreciated Mr Tucker’s kind remarks. DONATION APPRECIATE]^ The Mayor (Mr B. R. Macdonald), chairman of the Unemployment Relief Committee, expressed appreciated to “The Herald” representative yesterdav, of a donation of £B/8/- from the Geraldine Women’s Institute committee's funds, from the proceeds of the recent community “sing,” conducted by Messrs Alan Brown and Bert Goodland of station 3YA under the auspices of the Institute.
