RACING & TROTTING

On And Off The Track A BUDGET OP NEWS AND VIEWS FIXTURES Racing: May I—Reefton J.C. May 4, 6—Hawke’s Bay J.C. May 4, 6—Westland R.C. May 4, 6—Egmont J.C. May 6—Dunedin J.C. May 11—Amberley R.C. May May 16, 18—Wanganui J.C. May 17, 18—Marlborough R.C. May 17, 18—Southland R.C. May 18—Ashburton County R.C. May 23, 25—Te Kuiti R.C. May 25—South Canterbury J.C. Trotting: May 2, 4—Forbury Park T.C. May 4, 6—Cambridge T.C. May 11—Oamaru T.C. May 11, 13—Waikato T.C. May 16—Marlborough T.C. June 1, 3—Canterbury Park T.C. Reefton races to-day. The Forbury meeting will begin tomorrow. .... Membo has not been entered for the Great Northern Steeplechase, so it is presumed that a trip to Melbourne has been definitely decided on. Grecian Prince strained a muscle at Westport, and was brought back to Riccarton for a spell. The rest should be beneficial, as the black gelding has had a strenuous time during the last three or four months.

It was reported at Riverton that B. Burgess might remain in the South to race Walton Park, Pukeko and Dollar Bill at the Dunedin meeting next week, but their names are not in the entry lists.

The Canterbury Jockey ' blub has earmarked £SO, to be allocated to Hunt Clubs in proportion to the number of hunters qualified and raced at the Grand National meeting. If the experience of recent years is repeated next August, most of that £SO will come to South Canterbury.

The ex-New Zealander, Mr E. J. Watt, continues to experience a full share of luck in his racing operations in Australia. A few weeks ago he won a two-year-old race with Fanfare, who was considered a Derby possibility, and on Saturday he gained a surprise win in the Cropper Stakes at Randwick with Cereza, a two-year-old filly by Heroic. The Grandcourt gelding High Court, who has made a poor return for the thousand guineas paid for him four or five year ago by a Dunedin man, is one of the seven nominated for the May Hurdles at Dunedin. High Court won the Hawke's Bay Cup, but he did not race up to expectations in the South Island, and he has had long periods of idleness owing to unsoundness. There will be less -than usual South Island interest in this year’s Great Northern meeting. Royal Limond and Free Air are the only jumpers engaged which are trained in this island, and Free Air is really an Aucklander. Verden, though trained at Trentham, is still owned by a Lyttelton man, and completes the list. In flat races. Rebel Chief, Sea Fox and Horowhenua are among the entrants, but two have Auckland associations. Kinnoull by right of conquest must be awarded the South Island two-year-old championship, and all 4 oing well he will be a classic contender next season. Pink Coat’s Hurry On blood should help his stock to stay the Derby course, and Red Edna traces back to St. Simon, Musket, and Fisherman. Kinnoull’s dam Lady Links is by the Marco horse King Mark from Links by St. Andrew (by St. Leger) from Sabra (by St. George). St. Leger sired Derby winners in St. Hippo, Nestor, Crispin and Bluejacket. St. Hippo as a three-year-old won the New Zealand Cup and Auckland Cup (8.10), and Bluejacket (twice) and Nestor won Auckland Cups. There is no bar to Kinnoull’s pedigree to classic success. Washdyke has a prospective Derby candidate in Kinnoull, and all going well Heloise will be prepared for the Oaks. South Canterbury people held nearly all the tickets on the Lord Warden filly when she paid a big dividend at Riccarton, her track work with Kinnoull having been of an attractive nature. There is every reason to hope that Heloise will stay, as her dam, Ma Mie, is by Martian from the Kilbroney mare Kildee, and the pedigree of her sire, Lord Warden, bristles with Derby blood. Hurry On left Derby winners in Coronach, Captain Cuttle, and Call Boy; while Hythe, Lord Warden’s dam, is by Chaucer (by St. Simon), grandsire of Colorado, Pharos and Fairway. If a pedigree alone could win a classic, Heloise would not easily be beaten. The hardest-worked two-year-old in the Dominion this season was the Australian-bred youngster Velocipede (by Rampion), who started in 19 races. With 6 wins and 5 places he has the best record in this respect, but his earnings were only £540. Hororata ran 17 times for 5 wins and 5 places, and collected £655. Gay Sheik raced 18 times for 5 wins and 9 places, worth £1023, while Triune started on 15 occasions, winning once and being placed 10 times for £360. Two-year-olds which won £2OO or more were as follows: Wins Starts Places £

Legatee and Parquet did their Easter racing at Randwick, otherwise they might have been higher up the list.

The stewards at Randwick caused a stir when they conducted a retrospective inquiry into toe form of the New Zealander Silver Ju.iilee, winner of the La Perouse Handicap (says a Sydney writer). They decided to take no action. By their actions, the officials created a precedent, as in the past it has not been the usual practice to hold inquiries into the performances of winners on other courses. It was chiefly the superior riding of Voitre, however, that won Silver Jubilee honours.

Roi l’Or is now assessed at 2.6, 3.38, and 4.22; and Indianapolis at 2.7, 2.39, 4.23. Mrs M. Harrall has purchased the pacer Eureka Bay, who is to go into L. Maidens's stable. This may mean that Red Shadow also is to go to Winchmore. It is reported that Mr G. J. Barton, in recognition of C. Dunlevey’s wonderful success with his horses, has presented the Addington trainer with a new car. Master Brierly had been in Australia almost a year, without registering a win, when he scored in the Cumberland Plate and the A.J.C. Plate at Randwick. Akuna, the Archery mare who won the Sydney Cup, failed to run into a place as a two-year-old, and won only once as a three-year-old. She won three races at four, but was not a winner at five, and this season her first success was gained in the Sydney Cup. Peter Pan’s two wins at the A.J.C. autumn meeting were worth £2250, and raised his total winnings to over £30,400, placing him tenth on the list of stake-earners in Australia and New Zealand. It is understood that the application of the Methven Trotting Club to hold its meeting on May 6th has been granted by the Conference. Seventeen-year-old John Pointer, a big pacer who was sold out of J. Henderson’s stable to go to Australia, recently won a mile and a half race in Perth. When the Southland Racing Club's programme was framed, the date for declaration of weights for the first day was fixed for May 6th. Since then the Dunedin Club has arranged a meeting for that day and publication of the Invercargill handicaps will be withheld until May 7. REEFTON J.C.
