THE WEATHER
To the Editor of ” The Timaru Herald ” Sir,—l must again remind your South Canterbury readers, especially occupiers of land, that a shortage of rain is very unlikely, as according to periodic averages, this year’s average rainfall will probably equal last year’s—a little over 2 inches per month. The rainfall recorded for the year to date—B.32 inches—has been unusually well distributed in comparison with other districts, and as the prevailing weather is always mainly a reflection of the human mind, physically expressed, it behoves us to carefully maintain a big share of that confidence which alone calms all storms and troubles. The rainfall in Christchurch for the year to date is only 4.32 inches. If Christchurch and North Canterbury settlers choose to depend on accident, rather than design for fulfilment of their wishes, they should be permitted to enjoy their opinions in peace. They are unconsciously inviting storms and floods—the swing of the pendulum—which, we trust, may not prove disastrous, while we continue on the even tenor of our way.—l am, etc., C. H. MASON. Timaru, April 29.
